Rating:

Stoned is a 2005 fictionalized biography of famed multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones, who led the blues-rock revolution in 1960s London, founded The Rolling Stones and established them as a leading rival to mega-stars The Beatles, and then died at age 27, just as the musical revolution he helped orchestrate was hitting its stride. Brian Jones established himself as a fixture in London's music scene as a teenager, resisting the temptations of popular music and devoting his talents towards American rural blues songs, championing the work of Elmore James and Robert Johnson in local blues and jazz clubs. In 1962, he took out an advertisement in a local music magazine in search of like-minded musicians. That advertisement started the band that would soon attract Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, later renamed The Rolling Stones by Jones himself. The band took off, but Jones' involvement decreased as the band got bigger. In 1969, Jones was found dead in his own swimming pool. Stoned is an exciting film that offers one possible story for why Jones resisted celebrity, and how he died that day.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Stoned accomplishes the unlikely feat of making the golden years before medical science and the law caught up with rock culture look dull.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Fans of the band will likely be disappointed (its music is represented by a handful of covers), and younger audiences will wonder what the fuss is about.

  • 40

    Variety

The film's sputtering dramatic engine, underwhelming perfs, and absence of music by the Stones themselves may leave the key younger demographic wondering what all the fuss is about.
