Stray Dogs, directed by Catherine Church, is a 2002 drama about a mother's love and sense of protection for her children set in a 1958 southern Appalachian town on Carter Mountain. Darla Carter (Guinevere Turner) is a young pregnant mother, married to an abusive alcoholic husband, and together they have two rambunctious boys. Darla has recently lost three infant children who were all female and due to this she is terribly worried about her current pregnancy. Her fear is only made worse by a local legend that female children cannot survive on Carter Mountain. Darla's torn between her fears and her responsibilities: protecting her, possibly female, unborn child or care for her current male children? She contemplates leaving Carter Mountain and her husband but realizes she could not make her escape with two small children in tow. Will Darla abandon her family on Carter Mountain to start a new life with her unborn child?
