Movie Summary

Hal Needham
Stroker Ace is a 1983 NASCAR-themed comedy written Hugh Wilson and co-written and directed by Hal Needham. The film follows popular but careless NASCAR driver Stroker Ace (Burt Reynolds). Ace's behavior leads him afoul of his sponsor and he finds himself looking for new sponsorship. Fried-chicken mogul Clyde Torkel (Ned Beatty) steps in and provides Ace with a new contract. Ace, being his usual careless self, does not realize what exactly the new contract stipulates. Once he discovers what is involved, he concocts a plan with his mechanic Lugs Harvey (Jim Nabors) to get himself removed from the contract. Torkel learns of the plan and tolerates Ace's continued outrageous behavior as a means of promoting the Chicken Pit franchise. Ace remains in contention for the championship throughout the season. In the final race, both Ace and Torkel face decisions that challenge their morals and beliefs and being out of touch during the race leads to nearly disastrous results. Will Ace or Torkel come out on top? Watch Stroker Ace and find out!moreless

The must-miss movie of the summer. It's a witless retread of the earlier, far funnier road-movie collaborations of Mr. Needham and Mr. Reynolds.

It's hard to believe there could be so much slack in a film only 96 minutes long. Director Needham blows off the last 25 or so with a race sequence. We're treated to one uninterest...
