Stuart Saves His Family is a mid '90s comedy about bringing a family with fledgling bonds back together. Stuart Smalley (Al Franken) is the host of a public access self-help show. He has an innate knack for helping people with their life problems, but can never seem to help himself. He is a member of countless 12 step programs, from Alcoholics Anonymous to Gamblers Anonymous. His boss hates him and moves his show from its noon slot to a slot at two in the morning. Stuart forgets his anger management training and confronts him. This act gets him immediately fired. To further his funk, he gets news of his aunt's death. She was the only person in the family whom he was still close to. Stuart takes the bus to Minneapolis and meets up with his family. They are horribly dysfunctional and plagued by alcoholism, drug abuse, gambling problems and many other things that Stuart has worked for many years to escape himself. He resolves to employ all his self-help talent to rescue his family from their current state.
