Sugar & Spice is a comedy about a group of high school cheerleaders who decide to rob a bank. Diane Weston (Marley Shelton) is the captain of the cheerleading squad and one of the most popular girls in school. Her life takes a dramatic turn, however, when she becomes pregnant by her boyfriend, Jack Bartlett (James Marsden). Desperate for money, she decides to rob a bank and enlists the aid of her best friends, Kansas (Mena Suvari), Hannah (Rachel Blanchard), Cleo (Melissa George), Fern (Alexandra Holden) and Lucy (Sara Marsh). At the same time, Diane's nemesis, Lisa Janusch (Marla Sokoloff) plots to steal Jack away from Diane. Despite the fact that none of the girls are particularly smart, the bank robbery goes amazingly well and they make off with thousands of dollars. Lisa finds out about the robbery, though, and plots to use it against the girls. Will they get away with it or is Diane destined to give birth in jail?

Amusingly subversive, thanks to sharp writing and direction, by Mandy Nelson and Francine McDougall, respectively.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

It's is not a great high school movie like "Election," but it's alive and risky and saucy.

The New York Times Dana Stevens
