Sugar is a romantic drama written and directed by John Palmer and based on a group of short stories created by Bruce LaBruce. It is a coming of age story portraying the life of a young gay man and his search for acceptance and understanding. The Canadian film analyzes and explores the life of Cliff (Andre Noble) who recently turned 18. A catalyst for change in his life is when his younger sister gives him his birthday gifts and a piece of advice. Cliff leaves his suburban life and heads into the inner city where he meets Butch (Brendan Fehr) who introduces him to a whole new way of living and thinking. The film explores the themes of drugs, alcohol and youth. Set around the context of a young gay man in search of acceptance. Sugar was deservedly nominated at the 2005 Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
