Summer and Smoke is a 1961 film adapted from the 1948 Tennessee Williams play of the same name. Summer and Smoke is set in a town called Glorious Hill in Mississippi and focuses on the main character, Alma Winemiller (Geraldine Page), an unwed daughter of a minister, and the romance that she has with her longtime neighbor, John Buchanan Jr. (Laurence Harvey). Throughout the movie, the elder Winemiller sets herself just out of reach of Buchanan, allowing herself to have a romance with him, but not anything more concrete, oft denying his advances towards furthering their relationship. As the movie progresses, Winemiller finds that she has become smitten with Buchanan and renounces her previous refusal towards him, as she now desires to be with him. However, the question here is whether Buchanan can accept her new ways and create the life with her that he desired, or will he move on from her, leaving her with too little too late?
