Summer Rental is a comedy from 1985 directed by Carl Reiner. Air traffic controller, Jack Chester (John Candy) takes his wife Sandy (Karen Austin) and kids Jennifer (Kerri Green) and Bobby (Joseph Lawrence) to a Florida beach for vacation. Unfortunately, the family begins to move their belongings into the wrong house. When they realize the mistake, they make a move to the right vacation home which is located on a public beach and is a beat up, decrepit shack. Al Pellet (Richard Crenna), a skilful sailor from the area, owns this vacation home, and when Jack confronts him about the poor living conditions, Al almost throws the family out. Jack makes a bet with Al and the two decide to have a boat race. If Jack wins, his family stays rent-free at the house during their vacation. The problem is Jack hasn't sailed for many years. Luckily an old sea-faring bartender takes a liking to Jack and volunteers to help him.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 75

    The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Though Candy greatly underplays Jack Chester, a beet-red seer-sucker summer renter, his genial humor and collaboration with Reiner make Summer Rental a small pleasure. [12 Aug 1985]

  • 50

    Chicago Tribune

Director Carl Reiner, an old comedy pro, does well enough with the comedy's dumb but funny big-bust and jock-strap jokes. [09 Aug 1985, p.D]

  • 25

    Miami Herald Bill Cosford

It's hard to figure how the combination of director Carl Reiner, comedian John Candy and a movie with the title Summer Rental could come to nothing. [10 Aug 1985, p.D7]
