Movie Summary

Carl Reiner
Summer School is a 1987 romantic comedy from acclaimed director Carl Reiner. High school gym teacher Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon) has his summer vacation all planned. He's going to hit the beaches in Hawaii with his beautiful young girlfriend and surf the summer away. Freddy's plans come to a screeching halt when Vice-Principal Gills (Robin Thomas) makes it clear - teach summer school or be fired. Now Freddy must spend his summer vacation with a group of mis-fit students, including surfer girl Pam (Courtney Thorne-Smith), teenaged male stripper Larry (Ken Olandt), football obsessed Kevin (Patrick Labyorteaux), and pregnant Rhonda (Shawnee Smith). Freddy's first day is a total disaster, with all but one of his students ditching class. The one bright spot in his day is meeting fellow summer school teacher Robin Bishop (Kirstie Alley). Freddy falls hard for her, but Robin is involved with Vice-Principal Gills. Gills already holds Freddy's future in his hands, refusing to let him teach in the fall semester if his students fail. Stealing his girlfriend will not improve his situation, but Freddy doesn't care. Can he turn his teenage slackers into graduates in time to save his job, and win the woman of his dreams?moreless

A comedy so listless, leisurely and unspirited that it was an act of the will for me to care about it, even while I was watching it.
