2000
Rating:
R
Sunset Strip is a stylish ensemble drama that follows the struggling musicians, groupies and artists around Los Angeles' famed music scene in the 1970s. The 2000 film covers 24 hours in the quest for fame, fortune, love and, of course, sex among the varied characters drawn to the rock-and-roll scene. Color-blind photographer Michael Scott (Simon Baker) has a crush on his costume designer Tammy Franklin (Anna Friel), who only has eyes for swaggering rock stars like Glen Walker (Jared Leto). Aspiring guitarist Zach (Nick Stahl) gets advice from elderly Mr. Niederhouse (John Randolph), who once played with the "Gone With The Wind" orchestra. Alcoholic songwriter Felix (Rory Cochrane) looks like he is headed for the gutter, and chattering record producer Marty Shapiro (Adam Goldberg) cannot stop talking or snorting his way through the clubs. Director Adam Collis captures both the comedy and tragedy of life on the fringes of the entertainment industry by intersecting these colorful personalities on one wild night.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Moves smoothly amid a near-perfect period evocation, captured in an array of shifting moods.

  • 50

    Variety Robert Koehler

Interesting structure provides pic with plenty of opportunities for social satire, human comedy and chance encounters, but few setups are ever dramatically fulfilled.

  • 10

The New York Times Dave Kehr

A youth comedy so relentlessly sordid and depressing that it's likely to send its audience straight into the arms of the nearest psycho-pharmacologist.
