Released:
2007
Rating:
R

Sunshine is a 2007 science fiction film from the acclaimed creative team behind 28 Days Later, featuring director Danny Boyle, screenwriter Alex Garland, and actor Cillian Murphy. Sunshine is an outer-space thriller firmly in the tradition of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, and Alien. The film takes place in the near future, 2057, as humans stare helplessly at the dying sun in the sky. The star's power has diminished steadily, throwing most of the world into a permanent winter. An experimental spacecraft called the Icarus was designed by the world's leading astro-engineers to carry a bomb to the sun. If the plan worked, the sun would re-ignite and return to its former power. The plan didn't work. Earth lost contact with Icarus, leaving the cause of failure unknown. Now, a new team of scientists will pilot Icarus II on the same mission. They are humanity's last hope of survival as they fly a bomb across the galaxy to save our brightest star and learn the hard way what happened to Icarus I. Sunshine is a visually stunning and emotionally powerful science fiction film, featuring a talented ensemble cast.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

A first-rate, seemingly sweat-free entertainer, Mr. Boyle always sells the goods smoothly, along with the chills, the laughs and, somewhat less often, the tears. He's wickedly good...

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

For though it can't maintain its momentum all the way to the end, Sunshine until it stumbles is gratifyingly far from the usual space-opera stuff.

  • 60

    Variety Derek Elley

Like a collapsing star, Sunshine initially burns brightly but finally implodes into a dramatic black hole.
