Super Troopers is comedy troupe Broken Lizard's first major feature film release, showcasing their unique brand of offbeat hilarity. The state troopers of Spurbury, Vermont tend to cause almost as much trouble as they end up preventing. Their penchant for buffoonery and goofing off even extends to their jobs, where they routinely prank the citizens of Spurbury and themselves. The only things standing in the troopers' way are the local Spurbury police and their own fellow officer, the incompetent and rage-prone Rodney Farva (Kevin Heffernan). When budget cuts threaten their branch, their encounters with the local police go from a simple rivalry to a no-holds-barred fight for the remaining station in town. Their luck seems to take a turn for the better when they discover a murder scene along with an immense cache of marijuana, but nothing is ever as easy as it seems for the troopers. Full of wit and silliness alike, Super Troopers is already a cult comedy classic.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety David Rooney

A fairly sustained barrage of broad undergraduate humor and gross-out gags that should tickle young auds looking for unsophisticated laughs.

  • 20

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

There's nothing super about Super Troopers except for those deep into the low end of the frat-house mentality that equates smart-alecky with hilarity.

  • 10

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Bad and tasteless. You laugh neither with it nor at it but rather sit counting the minutes while the movie laughs, for no good reason, at itself.
