Movie Summary

Richard Donner , Richard Lester

Lex Luthor is sitting in jail at the film's outset with his nincompoop partner Otis, having been put there by Superman after attempting to send most of California falling into the sea in the first movie. He is busted out by his buxom associate Ms. Tessmacher and they head north to Superman's Fortress of Solitude to learn further secrets about him to better destroy him with. Meanwhile, bigger fish emerged to be fried when the three Kryptonians imprisoned in outer space at the beginning of the first film ' General Zod, Ursa and Non are released by a nuclear blast and fly to Earth, finally to rule. It's then up to Superman to stop them before they, and Lex Luthor along with them, can succeed.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

A marvelous toy. It's funny, it's full of tricks and it manages to be royally entertaining, which is really all it aims for.

  • 100

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

It brings the fantastic into our everyday lives; it delights in showing us the reaction of the man on the street to Superman's latest stunt.

  • 90

Superman II emerges as a solid, classy, cannily constructed piece of entertainment which gets down to action almost immediately.
