Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is the third sequel in the popular superhero franchise starring Christopher Reeve as the beloved comic book icon. This latest installment sees arch villain Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman, Unforgiven, The French Connection, The Conversation, The Quick and the Dead) busted out of jail by his nephew Lenny (Jon Cryer, Pretty in Pink, Hot Shots, Two and a Half Men), to continue his quest to rid the world of the Man of Steel. This time, Luthor's diabolical plan is to create a foe of equal power for Superman derived from his own DNA and brought about by a nuclear explosion created when Supes jettisons Earth's nuclear stockpile into outer space out of philanthropy. The result? Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow, Wiseguy)! Apart from this little snag and his usual problems trying to bed Lois Lane (Margot Kidder, Sisters), Clark Kent must fend off the advances of the daughter of the Daily Planet's new owner, Lacy Warfield (Mariel Hemingway, Star 80, Delirious).moreless

Superman IV is a pathetic appendage to the series, a dull, shoddy film that makes the minimal 1950s TV series seem rife with production values by comparison. [27 July 1987, p.10C]

This one is a big, big disappointment. [27 July 1987]
