Superman: The Movie is a superhero film directed by Richard Donner based on the DC comics character, Superman, beginning with his alien origins to his quiet upbringing in Smallville, Kansas as Clark Kent, and to his ultimate future as the iconic Man of Steel with a titanic struggle with an arch nemesis in the likeness of Lex Luthor. As an infant, his scientist father Jor-El (Marlon Brando) sent Kal-El to Earth before his planet Krypton’s sun explodes. After his ship crashes in Smallville, a childless couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent (Glenn Ford and Phyllis Thaxter), adopt Kal-El but soon realize that their son, now called Clark, is not like other children as he can run faster than a moving train and had the strength to lift a truck up one-handed at five. After his father dies, he seeks out the Fortress of Solitude, a structure built as a memorial to Krypton, in the Arctic Circle. He enters to learn about his origins and leaves with his powers fully developed and a dedication to become a savior of his adopted planet. Clark (Christopher Reeve) dons a pair of eyeglasses and a slightly too big suit as a reporter for The Daily Planet, keeping the guise of a bumbling clumsy man to distance himself from the costumed “Superman”, as dubbed by another reporter, Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). While Clark becomes a front-page story, criminal mastermind Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) plans to create a new West Coast of the US by detonating a nuclear missile into the San Andreas Fault and most definitely views Superman as a threat to his plans. Known for its large-scale visual effects, Superman was nominated for three Academy Awards and received a Special Achievement Award for its visual effects. Its success spawned not only three sequels but helped with resurrect the science fiction genre.moreless
