Support Your Local Sheriff is the beloved 1969 Western comedy from writer William Bowers and director Burt Kennedy (The Train Robbers, The War Wagon) and features a beloved television star in essentially a warm up vehicle for a future popular television character. The film deals with a stranger named Jason McCullough (James Garner, Maverick) wandering into a small Western town which is just going wild with no law and order. He applies to be the sheriff and is appointed quickly by the mayor (Harry Morgan, High Noon, How the West Was Won, The Apple Dumpling Gang). He quickly restores law and order to the town, hires a deputy (Jack Elam, Once Upon a Time in the West, Cannonball Run), romances the mayor's daughter (Joan Hackett, Will Penny) and jails killer Joe Danby (Bruce Dern, The Burbs, The Cowboys). However, Joe's family don't take too kindly to their brother being jailed and are going to get him out.
