Movie Summary

Jonathan Mostow

Surrogates centers around a futuristic world in which remote-controlled humanoids known as surrogates assume the lives of humans. While the human operator stays within the confines of their own home, their stronger, more beautiful and physically fit surrogate double interacts with the outside world. FBI agent Tom Greer and his partner Jennifer Peters are called in to investigate the mysterious murder of Jarod Canter, who is also the son of surrogate creator Dr. Lionel Canter. Although humans are supposed to be safe from any physical harm suffered by surrogates, several of the humanoids are dying, thus killing their human host. As Greer and Peters dig deeper into the mystery, they come across a strange anti-surrogate leader known as The Prophet. The agents also stumble across a sinister plot that exposes who wants to put surrogates out of commission and why.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Mostow's smart speculative suspenser imagines a time when people can live through ideal versions of themselves while they sit wired up at home.

  • 40

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

In this kind of industrial entertainment, particularly one that seems to be missing some connective narrative tissue, it's hard to know if the writers or the director can be credit...

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times

An interesting idea, but unfortunately, the film's narrative and emotional engine operate as mechanically as the titular, dead-eyed glamazoids.
