Swayamvar is a story about the mean-spirited widow of a kind-hearted man. The evil widow, Durgadevi (Nadira) treats people shabbily, especially her servants, and her comeuppance is at the center of this Bollywood tale. A former servant, Ratanlal (Shreeram Lagoo) wants to arrange marriages for his two sons, Laxman (Shashi Kapoor) and Ram (Sanjeev Kumar). He proposes that Laxman and Ram marry Durgadevi's daughter, Roopa (Mousshumi Chatterjee), and her step-daughter Shanti (Vidya Sinha). Roopa is ill-mannered like her mother and Shanti is kind-hearted like her father. Durgadevi embarrasses Ratanlal when he proposes that his poor sons should marry her privileged daughters. So, Ratanlal hatches a plan and enlists help from his two sons. His plan is to have Ram become a household servant and win the heart of the kind daughter, Shanti, and have his other son, Laxman, gallivant around town as a playboy and woo the superficial and cold Roopa. Ratanlal hopes that in the end Durgadevi will be taught a lesson. Swayamvar is a clever story about the lower class having the last laugh at the expense of the upper class.moreless
