Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is a dark comedy and musical directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman. It was released in 2007 by Dreamworks and Warner Bros. as an adapted story from an award winning stage musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. Sweeney Todd (Depp) is a different kind of barber, he brings new meaning to "a little off the top" by making it your whole head. He's a serial killer, a brutal one, and he's getting revenge on the judges and aristocracy who falsely sentenced him to prison, to steal and rape his wife and teenage daughter. So as they take his chair, he takes their life. And the bodies? Well luckily for him his close female accomplish, Mrs. Nellie has found a secret ingredient to improve her failing meat pie business: human! All this with a few musical numbers makes Sweeney Todd a dark and twisted fun romp.moreless

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Something close to a masterpiece, a work of extreme -- I am tempted to say evil -- genius.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

It's not entirely surprising that Burton's Sweeney Todd feels heavier on style than on substance -- so much that the style almost subverts the story. Still, it's a gorgeous artifac...

Both sharp and fleet, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street proves a satisfying screen version of Stephen Sondheim's landmark 1979 theatrical musical.
