Sweet Bird of Youth is a 1962 film adaptation of a Tennessee Williams play about an aspiring actor, Chance Wayne (Paul Newman), and his sordid relationship with a faded screen star, Alexandra Del Lago (Geraldine Page). The two travel to Chance's hometown of St. Cloud, Florida, where Chance was previously run out of town by "Boss" Thomas J. Finley, a powerful and corrupt politician who runs the town. Chance was in love with Finley's daughter Heavenly (Shirley Knight), and Chance hopes to rekindle the relationship. Finley intends to run Chance out of town again but matters are complicated by the presence of Alexandra, who has powerful friends of her own. For her part, Heavenly is still in love with Chance but will not do anything to cross her father. Meanwhile, an untold secret about Chance and Heavenly will affect the fortunes of everyone involved. Sweet Bird of Youth is directed by Richard Books, who also adapted the screenplay.
