Sweethearts is a dark romantic comedy about a blind date between everyman Arliss (Mitch Rouse) and the mentally unstable Jasmine (Janeane Garafolo). When Jasmine answers Arliss' personal ad in a local newspaper, the two agree to meet at a coffee shop called Asylum. Arliss arrives first, and is immediately schooled in the many personalities of coffee by Noreen (Margaret Cho), the waitress and a voice of wisdom throughout the film. He then meets Jasmine, but she's nowhere near his idea of the perfect woman. In fact, she's manic-depressive and potentially suicidal. Despite the shortcomings of his date, Arliss is a good guy and willing to help her in any way he can. Temporarily putting aside his concept of the ideal woman, Arliss stays for an evening of discussion on urban loneliness and love. But as the conversation deepens, Jasmine's demeanor goes from suicidal to homicidal -- and Arliss' life depends on how he responds.
