Swept From the Sea is a beautiful story of love and loss. The 1997 movie is based off of a book called Amy Foster by Polish author Joseph Conrad. The book was adapted to film by Tim Willocks and directed by Beeban Kidron. Dr. James Kennedy (Ian McKellen) and Miss Swaffer (Kathy Bates), his patient, recount the story of Amy (Rachel Weisz) and Yanko (Vincent Perez) as they reminisce on past times. Yanko, a young Ukranian in search of a better life, leaves on a ship headed for America. However, an ominous storm destroys the ship en route, leaving Yanko stranded in the ocean. He surprisingly makes it to land in one piece, where he is rescued by a young indentured servant named Amy. She is the only person who accepts Yanko for being a foreigner. It is not long before Amy and Yanko fall for one another, and ask to buy a farm for themselves. But years later, Yanko still feels out of place and wishes to return to Ukraine. A tragic turn of events ensues, for which Dr. Kennedy blames Amy. But Miss Swaffer apparently knows the whole truth behind the events that took place'moreless
