Swimmers, directed by Doug Sadler, is a 2005 drama film about how desperate circumstances bring two unlikely people together. The narrator and main character is Emma Tyler (Tara Devon Gallagher), an 11-year-old girl who has lost the one thing she loves. Emma develops a medical condition requiring ear surgery that prevents her from participating in her favorite sport, swimming. The inability to pay for Emma's surgery brings the family's emotional tension to a boil. Her father, Will Tyler (Robert Knott), struggles to make ends meet as a waterman in a coastal Maryland town. Emma's mother, Julia Tyler (Cherry Jones), battles with her efforts to hold her family together and her suspicion that her alcoholic husband is having an affair. Both parents mean well, but they cannot give Emma the attention she needs. In walks Merrill (Sarah Paulson) who returns to the small waterfront town in search of her lost innocence. Emma and Merrill find what they long for in each other, but Merrill cannot shake her troubled past.
