1998
Rating:
PG-13
Talk of Angels is a 1996 American film directed by Nick Hamm and starring Polly Walker, Vincent Perez, and Franco Nero. Based on the 1936 novel Mary Lavelle by Kate O'Brien, Talk of Angels is set in Europe in the 1930's. When a young Irish Governess Mary Lavelle (Walker) falls in love with her employer's married son Francisco Areavaga (Vincent Perez), she must make a decision as to whether or not to continue the affair or face a failed engagement. Mary travels from Ireland to Spain to teach English to the children of a prominent Spanish family. Francisco, the family's eldest son, regularly talks of his distaste for Spanish president General Franco. As the Spanish Civil War is about to begin, tensions are high both within the family and between Mary and her young lover. Filmed in 1996 but not released until 1998, the film received poor reviews from critics, claiming it a lesser Casablanca. Talk of Angels also stars Frances McDormand and Penelope Cruz.moreless
