Taras Bulba is an epic version of Gogol's novel about the conflict between the Poles and the Cossacks in 16th century Russia. At first, the two sides are uneasy allies in a war against the invaders of the Ottoman Empire; but vitory over their common enemy only leads to subjugation for the Cossacks, with the Polish army now in control of the Ukrainian Steppe. After twenty years, Cossack leader Taras Bulba sends his sons Andrei and Ostap to Kiev University to gain an education - and also to learn the ways of their brutal enemies. But Andrei falls in love with the young daughter of a Polish noble, Natalia Dubrov. Will Andrei betray his own people to save the woman he loves?

    • The film was originally intended as a three-hour roadshow epic, but was cut down to 124 minutes by a large team of editors, much to the regret of director J. Lee Thompson. He later noted ruefully that Yul Brynner, his star, had blamed him for it and went for a lengthy period without speaking to him. The film was a box-office and critical flop.
