Taras Bulba is a war epic about the conflict between the Poles and the Cossacks in 16th century Russia as seen through the eyes of the Cossacks' leader, Taras Bulba. In a fierce battle steeped in manipulation and betrayal in 16th century Russia, the Poles are losing the war against the Turks, until the Cossacks step in to defeat them. But the Poles then turn their forces against those of the Cossacks, resulting in subjugation for the Cossacks, who are under Polish rule, now in control of The Ukraine. Years later, Taras Bulba (Yul Brynner), leader of the Cossacks, sends his son Andrei (Tony Curtis) to school in Keiv, Poland, to gain an education, but also to learn the ways of Taras' brutal enemies, hoping to use to information to defeat them in battle. But the plan of his dear father and leader of his people is thrown for a loop when Andrei falls for the young daughter of a Poish noble, Natalia Dubrov (Christine Kaufmann). Natalia and Andrei face dire consequences on both sides, as a raging war begins to brew around them. J. Lee Thompson directs this elegant film, filled with captivating battles.moreless
