Movie Summary

Antoine Fuqua

Tears of the Sun is a 2003 war film directed by Antoine Fuqua. After a rebel army overthrows the democratic government of Nigeria and instates a new dictator, the Muslim rebels begin to execute all of the Christians in the country. Captain Bill Rhodes (Tom Skerritt) sends a team of United States Navy SEALs to rescue an American doctor, Lena Fiore Kendricks (Monica Bellucci), from a Catholic mission in Nigeria. Lead by Lieutenant A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis), the SEAL team tries to extract Dr. Kendricks, but she refuses to leave the local villagers to be slaughtered by the rebel army. At first, Lieutenant Waters wants to leave the other people behind and abide by the order from his superiors to remain uninvolved in the Nigerian war. But when Lieutenant Waters observes the violence of the rebel forces, he and his team decide to fight to evade the rebels and save the lives of the innocent villagers.

Unfortunately, the movie's real setting is a sentimental fantasy world, and its story is a spectacularly incoherent exercise in geopolitical wish fulfillment.
