Movie Summary

Director:

2007
Rating:
R
Tekkonkinkreet is a Japanese anime film based off of a Japanese manga series, also called Tekkonkinkreet. The film was made in 2006 and won the Best Film award at the Manichi Film Awards festival. The story centers around two clans of boys the Black boys and the White boys. Both groups live in a city called Treasure Town. The boys, orphans, couldn't be more opposite from one another. The Black boys live on the streets, and frequently engage in deviant activity. They are punks. The White boys embody everything innocent and holy. In a sense, they are sheltered from the realities of life. Much to everyone's surprise, these two opposing teams come together one day in an attempt to stop a group of mobsters, or yakuza, from demolishing their city and turning it into a theme park. The boys join forces and face religious freaks, thugs and yakuza members. The plot thickens even more when a team called "Kiddy Kastle" invades the city and begins to demolish Treasure Town. The boys' biggest obstacle, however, are their inner demons, which they must harness first in order to defeat the evil Kiddy Kastle corporation.moreless

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times

Arias has a tendency toward creative overkill, mostly in the climax that renders with apocalyptic imagery the metaphysical consequences of Black and White's separation.

  • 70

    Variety

Strained metaphysics dovetail with urban and architectural nostalgia in the exquisitely realized, minutely detailed Japanese anime Tekkonkinkreet.

Demands to be seen, if only for its beauty.
