Tempest is an international epic with an Italian director, Yugoslav locations, a Russian story (partially based on fact) and a cast including Italian, British, Canadian, American, Swedish, Czech and Austrian stars. When, in the 1770s, young army officer Peter Griniev is disgraced at the court of Catherine the Great, he is sent to a far-off outpost in a region torn by peasant dissent. On the way, he stops to rescue a stranger - who turns out to the leader of the ever-growing revolution.

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Although Alberto Lattuada was the sole credited director on this film, he suffered a brief illness during shooting, and, for two weeks, direction was taken over by no less a film-maker than Michelangelo Antonioni (who had not, at that time, gained his international reputation). His contribution was anonymous.

    • NOTES (1)

      • This is an adaptation of Alexander Pushkin's famous novel The Captain's Daughter. However, it also contains a great deal of material taken from a non-fiction book , also written by Pushkin, concerning the Pugachev rebellion against Catherine the Great during the 1770s.
