Tennessee Nights, also known as Black Water and Tennessee Waltz, is a film from 1989 about a young British lawyer, Wolfgang Leighton (Julian Sands), in Nashville conducting music rights negotiations. The film follows Leighton as he has a torrid affair with a sultry woman Sally Lomas (Denise Crosby), who ends up dead. Leighton is charged with murder and put on trial in a Southern city that does not take kindly to outsiders and with a legal system much different than the British one he knows best. Stuck in jail with all manner of degenerates, Leighton becomes friends with a teenage hitchhiker who may prove key to Leighton finding his freedom. Leighton's problems only get worse when he meets the judge presiding over his trial. Judge Prescott (Academy Award winner Rod Steiger) shows a hostility to Leighton that belies his outward Southern charm. Featuring a brief cameo by Johnny Cash, Tennessee Nights is a riveting, fish-out-of-water legal thriller.
