Terms of Endearment is a character-driven drama that film follows Texas widow Aurora Greenway (Shirley McClaine) through her experience raising her only daughter Emma (Debra Winger). Aurora lives for her daughter's happiness, but eventually her smothering parenting style drives Emma into the arms of Flap (Jeff Daniels), a man Aurora hates. When the couple are married and move to Iowa, Emma and Aurora's already strained relationship teeters near the breaking point. To escape her loneliness Aurora begins to date her next-door neighbor, a flighty former astronaut named Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson). Emma, now a mother herself, is dealing with problems in her own love life. Her once-passionate relationship with Flap has fizzled, and she fears that he may be cheating on her. Emma's marital troubles encourage her to rekindle her relationship with Aurora, and together the Greenway women work to salvage their relationships with each other and the men in their lives.
