2009
Rating:

Tetro is a psychological drama from famed writer and director Francis Ford Coppola. Filmed in black-and-white film noir style with color flashbacks, the movie stars Vincent Gallo as Tetro, a once-promising writer who suffered a crisis at the hands of his father and ran away to Buenos Aires, where he had an emotional breakdown. He left behind a brother, Bennie (Alden Ehrenreich), who idolizes his older sibling, and who, when he is old enough, journeys to find him, paying his way by working on cruise ships. Tetro (Vincent Gallo) lives with Miranda (Maribel Verdú), the beautiful woman who nursed him back to health. Being confronted by his brother, who encourages him to start writing again, brings back all the bad memories. On finding an unfinished play by his brother, Bennie writes an ending for it, and the trio set out to stage it at a literary festival in Patagonia. Here Tetro struggles to deal with his past and the adulatory praise of critics, while Bennie experiences a sexual awakening among the actresses who are staring in his brother's play.moreless

When Coppola finds creative nirvana, he frequently has trouble delivering the full goods. Tetro represents something of a middle ground in that respect.
