Thank You for Smoking is a black comedy about a lobbyist for the tobacco industry. Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) is the public face of the Academy of Tobacco Studies, a phony research firm that works with the cigarette companies to deny a link between smoking and cancer. His best friends are Bobby Jay Bliss (David Koechner), a gun lobbyist, and Polly Bailey (Maria Bello), an alcohol lobbyist. Together, they form a group, which they humorously refer to as the Merchants of Death. Nick's life is turned upside down one day when he is kidnapped by an anti-tobacco terrorist. His kidnapper tries to kill him with nicotine patches, but the plan backfires when Nick's high tolerance for nicotine keeps him alive. The public embraces him, but his fame is short-lived when an ex-lover, journalist Heather Holloway (Katie Holmes), writes an article that exposes the bribes Nick has given and the lies he has told on behalf of the tobacco industry. Fired from his job as a tobacco lobbyist, Nick must ultimately discover a new way to use his public relations skills, preferably for an ever more dangerous product.moreless
