Movie Summary

Tom Hanks

It's the summer of 1964, and across America, Beatlemania has hit. In small town Erie, Pennsylvania, teenager Guy spends his nights practicing his drums in his dad's appliance store. The One-ders are the local rock-and-roll band, when their drummer Chad breaks his arm, Guy scores an invite to join the band from lead singer Jimmy. His timing could not have been better, Jimmy just finished a catchy tune called "That Thing You Do!'' With Guy's drum beat giving the band a refreshed sound, they start gaining notice, especially from promoter Mr. White. With Mr. White's guidance, the band changes names to The Wonders, and scores a national tour for Playtone records. With success, the band starts to experience all sorts of challenges but the story stays on an upbeat note, keeping with the frothy, fun sound of 1960s pop.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Mr. Hanks's debut feature, written and directed with delightful good cheer, is rock-and-roll nostalgia presented as pure fizz.

  • 80

    Variety Emanuel Levy

A top-notch production, exuberant period music and Hanks the actor in an important role cunningly disguise a rather slight and inconsequential narrative.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The movie may be inconsequential, but in some ways that's a strength. Without hauling in a lot of deep meanings, it remembers with great warmth a time and a place.

  • A cool move for chicks and guys

Every guys dreams back then and now--be in a band and get a record! Every girl's dream, to chase after cute musicians. And then it all falls apart.
