The Abyss (Special Edition) is a 1989 science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron. Using the largest underwater set ever constructed, the film chronicles the aftermath of the USS Montana, a nuclear powered submarine, striking a mysterious object and sinking to the ocean floor. To rescue the submarine, the United States government enlists a SEAL team to perform the mission from a privately owned experimental underwater oil platform called Deep Core, created by Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). Though her estranged husband, Virgil "Bud" Brigman (Ed Harris), is the foreman of Deep Core, Dr. Brigman accompanies the SEAL team to the platform to help if needed. Complicating matters further are the presence of creatures that look unlike any other sea animal and a hurricane moving closer every minute. This special edition of the film includes 28 minutes of additional footage as well as a director's commentary track and a making-of documentary.
