The Accidental Tourist is a 1988 Oscar nominated movie for best picture, best music, and best screenplay written from another source. Geena Davis won the Oscar for best supporting actress. Macon Leary (William Hurt), is walking through his life, like there is nothing worth doing or living for. After a terrible tragedy Macon and his wife Sarah (Kathleen Turner) have trouble moving past their grief, and are not happy with each other anymore. They separate so they can figure out what they want or need from life. After Macon is in an accident, he moves back in with his spinster sister and his two bachelor brothers all of whom are very eccentric. When his dog starts to behave badly, Macon hires a dog trainer named Muriel Prittchet (Geena Davis). Muriel brings Macon out of his fog of pain and mistrust using her charm. Macon and Muriel fall in love and begin to enjoy each others company very much. Then Sarah comes back wanting to save the marriage. Will Macon stay with the lively, happy Muriel, or will he go back to his wife?moreless

I've never seen a movie so sad in which there was so much genuine laughter. The Accidental Tourist is one of the best films of the year.
