The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is a 1988 adventure comedy directed by Terry Gilliam, better known for his work with Monty Python. Told as a series of flashbacks and stories within stories, the film chronicles the exciting adventures of 17th century aristocrat Hieronymus Karl Frederick Baron von Munchausen (John Neville). As the story begins, a city under siege is amusing itself with a play of Baron Munchausen's life and times. Munchausen interrupts the play to protest its inaccuracies. He goes on to tell an amazing series of stories including a life-or-death wager with the Grand Turk where he is saved by the world fastest runner, Berthold (Eric Idle), the keen-eyed rifleman, Adolphus (Charles McKeown), strong man Albrecht (Winston Dennis), and Gustavus (Jack Purvis). Other scenes include a trip to the moon where he angers the King (Robin Williams) by discussing a past tryst with his wife, the Queen (Valentina Cortese), and a romantic dance number with the Goddess Venus (Uma Thurman). In the end, the story loops back to where it all began with the siege over and Baron Munchausen recounting his final tale.moreless
