The Adventures of Marco Polo is a drama-adventure film that follows the events of a man trying to recover treasures, only to be sidetracked by a beautiful woman. Marco Polo (Gary Cooper) and his assistant, Binguccio (Ernest Truex), are sent to China by Marco's father, Nicolo (Henry Kolker), who finds and sells Chinese treasures. Marco and Binguccio set sail from Venice and on their way to China, they are shipwrecked. They are forced to trek across the Persian desert and the mountains of Tibet in order to get China and find Kublai Khan (George Barbier), the palace of China's ruler. Marco and Binguccio finally arrive at the palace and they meet Khan's daughter, Princess Kukachin (Sigrid Gurie), with whom Marco becomes smitten with almost immediately. However, Khan's ill-tempered assistant, Ahmed (Basil Rathbone), is also in love with Princess Kukachin and when he discovers Marco's feelings toward her, he vows to do whatever it takes to keep him away from her.
