The Affairs of Anatol is a silent 1921 melodrama about decadence in the upper classes by master director Cecil B. De Mille. Wealthy Anatol de Witt Spencer (Wallace Reid) takes his young bride, Vivian (Gloria Swanson) on a sumptuous honeymoon, but finds his eye wandering to his high school sweetheart, Emilie (Wanda Hawley). Although she has been keeping company with Gordon Bronson (Theodore Roberts), Emilie lets Anatol woo her away but secretly remains involved with Bronson. Anatol then tries a different extramarital adventure with Annie Elliot (Agnes Ayres), whose tragic life story touches his heart, but he finds that she is more interested in his wallet than his soul. Anatol returns, finally, to his wife, but will Vivian still want him after his flagrant infidelity. Scandalous in its own time for its depiction of decadent women, this classic film features a production design by the renowned artist Erte.moreless
