1970

The American Soldier is Rainer Werner Fassbinder's homage to American gangster films. The film tells the story of a Vietnam War veteran, Ricky (Karl Scheydt), returning to West Germany to work as a contract killer. Pulpy and violent, The American Soldier fits right into the emerging vigilante genre of the early 1970s. Ricky is tasked by renegade German police with assassinating criminals who evaded apprehension. Of course, things are never that easy for Ricky. He falls in love with a call girl keeping tabs on him for her boss and reunites with his Mother and brother distracting him from his job. Shot in black and white and deliberately paced, Fassbinder delivers an astutely observed homage to film noir while exploring the modern effects of war, death, and killing. Darkly funny, The American Soldier provides a great introduction to German new wave cinema and the classic films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
