The Animatrix is a series of nine animated short stories taking place within the world of the first Matrix movie, drawn in the popular Japanimation or 'anime' style by many of the greatest directors in the medium. While two of the tales are connected, the rest of the films each have a distinct visual style and theme, each expanding and exploring the nature of the Matrix. The first two shorts comprising "The Second Renaissance" are a haunting and a thorough study of humanity's downfall prior to the first Matrix movie, explaining in-depth what drove the machine evolution from docile servitors into relentless enemies. "The Final Flight of the Osiris" in a visually stunning computer animated short by Square Pictures and direct prelude to Matrix: Reloaded. The rest of the shorts vary in tone and style, some barely connected to film events, but each add a unique voice and chapter to the Matrix saga, exploring the themes of free will vs. determinism, choice and consequence, and how to escape the symbiotic cycle of violence between the man and machine. Overall, the Animatrix is a philosophical examination of themes and ideas presented within the Wachowski brother's Matrix Universe, drawn in exquisite detail and remarkable style.moreless
