The Art of 16 Bars, released in 2005, is a documentary-style film about the journey and success of major hip hop artists. The film is narrated by Method Man and includes stories about and interviews with a number of prominent hip hop stars including: Nas, Jay-Z, Kayne West, 50 Cent, Slick Rick, The Notorious B.I.G., and many others. The film chronicles the struggles of these artists as they move from obscurity to fame, from rags to riches. What is unique about this film is that the artists are able to speak for themselves and describe their own individual journeys to success. The hip hop artists offer insight when describing details about the music industry and how to be successful despite the challenges. They reveal how they put together their first demo tapes and got signed. They also provide details about their early live performances and how they were able to deal with labels.
