The Associate is a 1996 comedy that takes a jab at the good-ol'-boy image of Wall Street. Laurel Ayres (Whoopi Goldberg), an African-American woman and financial genius, works for a large Wall Street brokerage and hopes for a promotion. However, Laurel's obnoxious co-worker Frank (Tim Daly) takes credit for all her brilliant ideas and schmoozes his way into becoming her boss. Frustrated and feeling like she has been passed over because she is a woman, Laurel quits and opens her own firm with the help of her loyal assistant Sally (Dianne Wiest). When Laurel faces all the same chauvinistic attitudes, she invents a "silent" partner, Robert S. Cutty. Now, with the illusion of a man in charge, new clients welcome the firm's financial wisdom, which is actually coming from Laurel. Unfortunately, the ruse hits a snag when the public wants to meet the elusive and mysterious Cutty. Laurel asks for help from a female impersonator friend who creates a realistic disguise for Laurel, but will people believe she is a gray-haired white man? Donald Trump makes a cameo as a scrupulous businessman who invests in Laurel's firm.moreless
