The Avengers is an action-comedy film directed by Jeremiah Chechik, based on the 1960s cult favorite British series of the same name that follows the espionage escapades of two agents of the Ministry, answering the calls of the Director, Mother (Jim Broadbent). John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) is an agent known for his impeccable style – a bowler hat, tricky umbrella, and a tailored suit. Debonair, good with a sword, and an owner of a quick but dry wit, Steed is a formidable agent in his own right. Emma Peel (Uma Thurman) is a master of many talents – chemistry, martial arts, fencing, and the arts. She is definitely no damsel-in-distress as she saves Steed just as much as he saves her. When the weather goes amuck, Mother sends the pair off to clear Mrs. Peel’s name in a supposed attempt to undermine a project in controlling weather called Prospero. Their investigations into Wonderland Weather and a quirky Sir August De Wynter (Sean Connery) leads them to discover a nefarious underground organization with a few members a bit closer to the Ministry than they ever thought possible.moreless

What's missing is chemistry: the right blend of seriousness and whimsy, and charmingly compelling interplay between leads Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman.

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

So how then do you duplicate a magic aura from 30 years ago? You don't.

  • 10

The New York Times Janet Maslin

It's a film to gall fans of the old television series and perplex anyone else.
