The Barkleys of Broadway is a 1949 musical featuring a husband and wife dance team, Josh (Fred Astaire) and Dinah Barkley (Ginger Rogers), whose marriage is teetering on divorce. Beyond their constant bickering, Dinah begins to get the urge to escape the frivolous musical comedies that made the couple famous and do more dramatic material. Worried about her commitment to the act, the producer of their show (Clinton Sundberg) introduces a pretty young understudy, Shirlene May (Gale Robbins). A jealous Dinah falls under the spell of a French theater director, Jaques Barredout (Jacques Francois), who wants her to do his latest serious drama based on the life of early film actress Sarah Bernhardt. With all this stress, the couple splits up, leaving Josh alone and depressed. Will the couple be able to overcome their squabbling and keep the act going? The Barkleys of Broadway is the last musical to feature Astaire and Rogers, and is directed by Charles Walters.
