The Baxter is a romantic comedy written and directed by Michael Showalter and released in 2005. Elliot Sherman (Michael Showalter) is a perennial "Baxter": the kind of man women settle for when they can't be with the one that they truly love. After an embarrassing string of failed relationships, Elliot grows cynical and contemplates celibacy. Soon thereafter, he encounters the stunning and sexy Caroline Swann (Elizabeth Banks). Before Elliot can marry Caroline, his dreams of happiness are jeopardized by the appearance of Bradley Lake (Justin Theroux), one of her old flames. Fearing that he will once again be dumped for another man, Elliot stews in self-pity. However, his new acquaintance Cecil Mills (Michelle Williams) isn't about to let him mope around all day. With Cecil's help, Elliot may be able to fight for Caroline's affections and win back her heart. The Baxter is a frank and irreverent film that will resonate with anyone that's sick of the dating game.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times Lawrence Van Gelder

In the end, The Baxter is a Baxter of a movie: well meaning and mildly likable, but unlikely to sweep you off your feet.

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

A tender love story and a dead-on lampoon of the genre, but its main drawback is that Showalter is egregiously miscast in the title role.

    Variety

May find a following among those who stand in awe of the names Sandler, Ferrell and Spade. But Showalter pushes too far: Nerdiness, after all, can be only so attractive.
