The Beat That My Heart Skipped is a complicated tale of self-discovery and buried secrets. Thomas Seyer (Romain Duris) finds himself engaging in his father's criminal lifestyle as a thuggish real estate rogue. Tom shows loyalty toward his father, despite their questionable involvement in property schemes. A random brush with Tom's deceased mother's music agent brings him back to the piano during a time when he is yearning for change. He comes to believe that he may follow in the footsteps of his mother and become a concert pianist. To prepare for an important audition, Tom enlists the help of an alluring piano teacher, a virtuoso named Miao Lin (Linh Dan Pham). She inspires him to strive toward higher standards for himself, despite a prevalent language barrier between the two. Tom must battle with the duality of his life, his musical aspirations, and the grittier side of his father's legacy.
