The Bells follows Alsatian innkeeper Mathias (Lionel Barrymore) whose conscience won't let him rest after he commits a terrible crime. Mathias is deep in debt and, in an act of desperation, kills a rich traveler and takes his gold. He thinks he's escaped punishment for the crime when the authorities look elsewhere for a suspect, but the man's spirit haunts him and slowly drives him mad, tormented by the sound of the tinkling bells that sounded when he committed the murder. The victims brother insists on an inquest and wants to use a mesmerist (Boris Karloff), who can supposedly read minds. It falls to Mathias to conduct the inquest, but he finds he cannot look the mesmerist in the eye. The 1926 silent film is based on a poem by Edgar Allen Poe, the master of suspense and set to a musical score from Eric Beheim. James Young directed the film that has been digitally remastered for current audiences from the original tinted and toned nitrate 35mm print.moreless
