The Bicycle Thief, a 1948 Italian film by Vittorio de Sica, follows a poor, unemployed man who must retrieve his stolen bicycle so he can return to work. Antonio Ricci, (Lamberto Maggiorani), in need of a job to support his family, is happy to find work posting flyers around town. The only condition is that Antonio must own a bicycle for transportation. When a thief steals his bicycle on his first day of work, Antonio's job is in jeopardy. Antonio and his son set out on a desperate search for the thief, but after wandering the city for hours, they are no closer to discovering the missing bike or the young man who stole it. After Antonio believes he sees the thief in a crowd and pursues the man, he makes a rash decision and must come to terms with the fact that he may never recover his bicycle or his job. The Bicycle Thief is considered a classic film and won several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.moreless
