The Big Blue

Movie Summary

Director:
Luc Besson
Released:
1988
Rating:
R
The Big Blue is a 1988 French film directed by Luc Besson. The film was originally released in France as Le Grand Bleu before its translation to the current title. The Big Blue follows the stories of two innovative free divers, Jacques Mayol (Jean-Marc Barr) and Enzo Maiorca (Jean Reno). Mayol and Maiorca are portrayed as competitive free-diving pioneers during the 1960s and 1970s. The film illustrates the competition between the divers as both children and record-holding adults. The two divers are both highly competitive and very talented. Mayol is willing to do whatever it takes, including putting his life on the line, to prove himself the better diver. The Big Blue also depicts the straining relationship between Mayol and Johana Baker (Rosanna Arquette). The Big Blue is based on the actual lives of Mayol and Maiorca, but is chronologically incorrect. The divers actually met as adults and developed a rivalry in attempting to reach the greatest depths possible in free diving. Jacques Moyol contributed to the film as a screenwriter.moreless
