The Big Steal is a film noir directed by Don Siegel and based on Richard Wormser's short story, The Road to Carmichael. In the film, U.S. Army lieutenant Duke Halliday (Robert Mitchum) is falsely accused of stealing Army money by Captain Vincent Blake (William Bendix). Despite his pleas of innocence, the evidence against him is incriminating. In order to prove he did not steal the money, Halliday decides to travel to Mexico and hunt down the man he believes committed the crime, Jim Fiske (Patric Knowles). When Halliday arrives in Mexico, he runs into Joan "Chiquita" Graham (Jane Greer), she is Fiske's ex-girlfriend and she is also looking for him regarding a separate incident of stolen money. The duo decide to team up and track down Jim Fiske and their stolen money. Will Joan and Duke be able to catch Jim and retrieve the stolen money before he disappears forever?
